The Field and the Knower

Arjuna wants to understand a fundamental distinction — between matter and spirit, between what is known and the one who knows. Krishna answers with a simple but profound image that can reorganize how we see ourselves.

अर्जुन उवाच | प्रकृतिं पुरुषं चैव क्षेत्रं क्षेत्रज्ञमेव च |

“Arjuna asks Krishna: "I want to understand the difference between matter and spirit — between the body and the one who is aware of the body — and what true knowledge really is."”

श्रीभगवानुवाच | इदं शरीरं कौन्तेय क्षेत्रमित्यभिधीयते |

“Krishna explains using a simple analogy: "This body, Arjuna, is called 'the field.' And the one who is conscious within the body — the one who watches, feels, and knows — is called 'the knower of the field.'"”

'This body is called the field; the one who knows it is called the knower of the field.' Your body, your thoughts, your emotions, your memories — all of these are the field: the ever-changing landscape of experience. But there is also something that is aware of all this: the silent witness, the knower. Most suffering comes from confusing the two — mistaking ourselves for the changing field, when we are also the steady awareness that watches it.
