The Longing to See

Arjuna has heard Krishna describe his infinite glories. Now a deep longing rises in him: not just to hear about the divine, but to see it directly. He asks for the vision of the cosmic form — the Vishwarupa.

मन्यसे यदि तच्छक्यं मया द्रष्टुमिति प्रभो | योगेश्वर ततो मे त्वं दर्शयात्मानमव्ययम् ||११-४||

“Arjuna says humbly: "If You think I am capable of seeing it, then please — show me Your imperishable, divine self."”

'If you think I am able to behold it, O Lord, then reveal to me your imperishable Self.' Arjuna asks humbly, unsure whether he is even worthy or able to witness such a thing. There is a tenderness in his request — the longing of every seeker to move beyond words into direct experience.

न तु मां शक्यसे द्रष्टुमनेनैव स्वचक्षुषा | दिव्यं ददामि ते चक्षुः पश्य मे योगमैश्वरम् ||११-८||

“Krishna says: "But your ordinary human eyes cannot see this. So I am giving you divine sight — supernatural vision. Now look at My supreme form."”

Krishna answers with compassion: 'But you cannot see me with your ordinary eyes. I give you divine sight — behold my majesty.' Some truths cannot be grasped by everyday perception. A new way of seeing must first be given. Grace opens the eye before the eye can see.

“Arjuna longs to move from hearing about the sacred to truly seeing it. Where in your own seeking do you sense the difference between knowing something with the mind and encountering it directly? What might 'new eyes' mean for you?”
