Om Tat Sat

Krishna closes the chapter with three short sacred syllables — Om Tat Sat — traditionally spoken to consecrate an act. In them he gives a simple test for whether anything we do carries real weight.

यज्ञे तपसि दाने च स्थितिः सदिति चोच्यते | कर्म चैव तदर्थीयं सदित्येवाभिधीयते ||१७-२७||

“Krishna continues: "Steadfastness in worship, discipline, and giving is also called 'Sat.' And any action done for the sake of the supreme truth is called 'Sat.'"”

The word 'Sat' means both 'reality' and 'goodness'. Krishna says that steadiness in sacrifice, discipline, and giving is 'Sat', and so is any action offered for the sake of the Supreme. To do good work, and to do it as an offering, makes the act real and enduring — it participates in what is true.

अश्रद्धया हुतं दत्तं तपस्तप्तं कृतं च यत् | असदित्युच्यते पार्थ न च तत्प्रेत्य नो इह ||१७-२८||

“Krishna closes the chapter with a warning: "But anything done without faith — any offering, any gift, any discipline, any effort — is called 'Asat,' meaning empty and worthless. It counts for nothing in this life or the next."”

'But whatever is offered, given, or done without faith is called Asat — unreal — and counts for nothing, here or hereafter.' The same outward act can be hollow or full depending on the heart behind it. It is not the scale of what we do but the sincerity and faith within it that gives it lasting value. A small act offered wholeheartedly outweighs a grand one done emptily.
