Bhagavad Gita Chapter 2, Verse 24 (BG 2.24) — Meaning, Translation & Commentary

That which cannot be destroyed by the forces of nature, nor by any human-made instruments or weapons, must surely be eternal. In the second line of this verse, multiple attributes of the atman are described—each word has been carefully chosen and arranged as part of a continuous chain of thought, not hastily assembled or used without purpose. The indestructible essence described in the first line must be eternal. That which is eternal must necessarily be all-pervading. The word "all-pervading" carries vast meaning and profound significance. No substance can remain that is not permeated by this all-pervading principle. If the eternal atman is all-pervading, it cannot possess any particular form—for form belongs only to that which is limited, bounded by borders beyond which other things exist. Just as hands and feet have form because space exists around them, so too the unlimited, all-pervading atman has no form, for there exists nothing to bound or limit it. Thus, that which is eternal and all-pervading must naturally be immovable and unchanging. Motion is impossible for it. Movement applies only to that which exists in a particular time and place and can therefore be displaced. The atman is absent neither from any time nor from any place, so the very question of motion does not arise. I cannot move about within myself. Here, the use of both "immovable" and "unchanging" may seem redundant, yet they carry distinct meanings. "Immovable" refers to stability at the root, as a tree remains fixed in one place yet grows upward. "Unchanging" negates even this upward motion. The infinite atman is immovable and unchanging—it undergoes no motion whatsoever. The ancient, primordial is called eternal. The word "eternal" carries two meanings: the literal and the implied. Literally, it means the atman is not newly created but ancient. In its deeper sense, it means the atman is not limited by time or space. Whenever, wherever, and in whomever self-realization is attained, that realization is one and the same—not different in different instances. The Blessed Lord then speaks further:
