The teaching of Lord Krishna is clear and entirely free from doubt. The Gita's Teacher says: Remember me as the Supreme Lord, the Ruler of the entire universe. God alone is the Ordainer and Controller. All events in creation occur only in His presence; otherwise, nothing is possible. Just as steam is the animating force of an engine—without it, the engine cannot move—so too is God the vital force of all existence.
Remember God not merely in His manifest form with attributes, as dwelling in Kailash like Shiva, or in Vaikuntha like Vishnu, or as a father in heaven. God is the Inner Witness dwelling in the heart of all beings. He can be recognized only within the heart. Just as one gives an address to find a person in a great city, so too Lord Krishna is revealing His dwelling place here—the heart.
By "heart," we do not mean the physical organ. In philosophy, "heart" is used metaphorically, not literally. The mind endowed with divine qualities—love, compassion, steadfastness, enthusiasm, affection, gentleness, forgiveness, and generosity—is called the heart. The Supreme Lord alone is the source of consciousness and power, bestowing strength upon all beings. All creatures revolve around God as puppets dance in the hands of a puppeteer. Puppets have no power, strength, or will of their own; whatever movements they display are entirely the work of the invisible hand that holds them.
From the ultimate perspective, God means Brahman in the form of pure consciousness. It is through connection with this consciousness that inert instruments like body and mind become capable of functioning. Otherwise, inert matter possesses neither the power to act nor to know. In this light, the verse means: In the presence of the conscious Self, all beings wander according to their nature. This truth is expressed here as: God, through His maya, causes all beings to revolve.
Another interpretation of this verse is as follows: The Supreme Self, manifested as consciousness in cosmic maya, is called God—the All-knowing, All-powerful One. This God, through His maya, causes all beings to revolve, meaning He grants fruits to all beings according to their karma. Without God, the existence of individual beings is impossible. All beings receive the powers of action and knowledge from God alone. Thus, understanding the principles of Vedanta, the metaphor used in this verse becomes clear.
