Bhagavad Gita Chapter 18, Verse 76 (BG 18.76) — Meaning, Translation & Commentary

Having heard the divine poetry of the Gita, Sanjaya expresses his clear response in this verse, saying that the dialogue between the Lord Krishna and the human Arjuna—between the complete and the incomplete, the supreme and the humble—is wondrous and supremely sacred. The knowledge of the Gita that Sanjaya heard was so profound and presented with such compelling clarity that he found himself repeatedly recalling it and experiencing waves of joy in his heart. The Gita is a guide to the knowledge that teaches the art of living life. Thus, the great sage Vyasa here indirectly points us toward the path of spiritual practice. Through the word "remembering," he shows that after hearing the teachings, the seeker should repeatedly engage in reflection—that is, contemplate upon the knowledge received. The fruit of true understanding shall be joy. In the meaningless journey of life from birth to death, when a human being perceives a definite divine purpose, then he becomes content. The study of the Gita not only gives meaning to our daily life, but also brings to the entire world a message of assured hope and bliss. The Gita lifts us from the dark alleys of life and establishes us upon the throne of our inner kingdom. It makes a human being the sovereign of his own inner circumstances. In the state of ignorance, human life is merely a scattered dance of death—the appearance and disappearance of things and beings. But the person educated by the knowledge of the Gita recognizes a harmony in the ordinary life of each day, perceives beauty, and hears sweet music.
