Bhagavad Gita Chapter 2, Verse 32 (BG 2.32) — Meaning, Translation & Commentary

The term "kshatriya" here does not refer to the caste determined by birth alone. Rather, it points to certain distinctive inclinations and tendencies of the individual's mind. A person of kshatriya nature is one who possesses such an abundance of capability and enthusiasm that he can protect the weak and the poor while also defending the nation against those who would destroy its culture. According to Hindu ethical philosophy, a person endowed with such qualities of leadership should never himself become a destroyer of culture or an aggressor. Yet it is equally not the tradition of the Hindus to respond with cowardice and refuse to counter unrighteousness. Whenever such an opportunity arises, it is the duty of the kshatriyas to recognize it as a golden opportunity and protect the nation. Such righteous wars are like open gateways to heaven. It is noteworthy here that Lord Sri Krishna, in presenting his reasoning, descends from the highest principles of Vedanta and comes down to the level of materialists, and even further—examining the situation from the perspective of an ordinary person in the world.
