Bhagavad Gita Chapter 3, Verse 33 (BG 3.33) — Meaning, Translation & Commentary

# BG 3.33 The nature of one's thoughts determines the direction of the mind, and these thoughts crystallize into enduring dispositions—this is what we call one's inherent nature. A person's character is determined by the thoughts that arise within the mind. It is said here that even the wise person acts according to their own nature. The term "wise" refers to one who has thoroughly understood the principles of karma yoga. Although such a person knows the principle, they encounter difficulty in its application because their inherent nature creates obstacles in their actions. Due to the vasanas—the deep-rooted impressions from the past—people cannot bring even this seemingly simple principle into their lives. The sole reason for this is that all beings follow their own nature. When nature is powerful, what restraint can anyone impose? This final statement in the Lord's teaching is not an expression of despair, but rather a reflection of His complete understanding of reality. He is fully aware that not every person possesses the capacity to walk the higher path of life. For the countless human beings standing on the lowest rung of the ladder of evolution, the pursuit of this path is never possible, for they are so bound by attachment to objects of desire and animal tendencies that it is impossible for them to suddenly renounce all of these. Only that person who possesses enthusiasm for action and ambition to achieve something in life can practice karma yoga and fulfill themselves. The Lord's statement here reveals His vast compassion and forbearance. If each person is bound by their own particular nature and compelled to act according to it, then there remains no opportunity for human effort and striving. In that case, this teaching itself would become purposeless. To this, the Lord responds:
