Bhagavad Gita Chapter 5, Verse 12 (BG 5.12) — Meaning, Translation & Commentary

The karma yogi who performs actions in the proper manner, freed from anxieties about the fruits of action, attains an indescribable peace. This peace is not something produced by economic or political circumstances. It cannot be established by constitutional bodies or international organizations. Rather, it is a state of the human mind wherein the inner world remains undisturbed by the intoxicated storms of thoughts that would otherwise create turmoil. Peace is the fragrance of an unbroken experience and an integrated personality. To attain this peace while performing actions with the spirit of sacrifice—this is the revolutionary principle taught here. When the seeker abandons the pride of doership and attachment to results, performing only their duty, they swiftly attain the peace of steadfastness in karma yoga. To emphasize this further, the Lord declares that the person who lacks this wisdom, unlike the karma yogi, becomes bound by their own actions due to pride and attachment to fruits. A medicine that heals in small doses can become the cause of death in excess, as with sleeping pills. A weapon meant for self-defense can also become an instrument of self-destruction. Similarly, in the world, when one acts without discernment, instead of finding the light of contentment and joy, one obtains only stronger bondage and a life of profound darkness. The sole cause of this is desire for a particular result. To wish for circumstances favorable to one's mind in the future—this is called desire or longing. If a frog were to attempt to expand itself to the size of an ox, its end would surely be sorrowful. A being of limited capacity is utterly powerless to create circumstances suited to itself and favorable to its wishes. Its effort, being like that of the frog, is devoid of wisdom. It should understand that while it is free in performing action, the fruits of action are obtained according to many laws, and thus it is helpless in obtaining results. Therefore, to cling to attachment toward a particular fruit is nothing but ignorance. But regarding those who perceive the ultimate truth, the Lord speaks thus:
