# BG 1.41 Arjun, extending his earlier argument, says that with the rise of unrighteousness, morality will gradually decline in society, and mixed castes will be born. Varna is a word whose meaning has become so distorted that it has become the subject of sharp criticism by educated people today. Their criticism is justified if the distorted meaning is accepted. But what we see happening in the country today in the name of varna is a fallen form of the Hindu way of life. In ancient times, the division of varna was based on the mental and intellectual capacity and maturity of individuals in society. Those who were wise and had an interest in study, teaching, and research were called Brahmins. Kshatriyas were those who had the ability to lead the nation through governance and who took upon themselves the responsibility to protect the nation from internal and external attacks and to bring peace and prosperity to it. Those who served society through agriculture and commerce were called Vaishyas. Those who could not perform any of these suitable duties were called Shudras. Their duty was to serve and labor. Our present-day social workers, officials, farmers, and industrial workers all fall within the aforementioned varna system. When we understand the varna system in its broader sense, we still see it manifested in many organizations today. Therefore, opposition to varna-mixing simply means that if an electrical engineer were to work as a surgeon in an operating room, it would endanger society, just as appointing a physician as an administrative and planning officer for a hydroelectric project would harm society. When moral decline occurs in society, youth consumed by uncontrolled desires meet freely with one another. Driven by passion, they give no thought whatsoever to social and cultural development. Therefore, Arjun fears that varna-mixing will cause the decline of society and culture.
