# BG 3.31 — Commentary Translation Mere intellectual knowledge of the principles of karma yoga cannot bring about our welfare; only through practicing in accordance with those principles can it truly benefit us. This is the teaching of Sri Krishna. Spiritual knowledge itself is one and eternal, yet among the teachers, the founders of different schools, and the various religious traditions, there exist many differences in perspective. The reason for this is that all of them, keeping in mind the circumstances of their times, sought to guide their own generations toward the ultimate human purpose—so that all seekers might attain the highest fulfillment. A human being should not live bearing burdens like a beast of burden working beneath the whip of a cart driver. Labor alone merely strengthens the body; it is through action that we remove the distortions of character and bestow radiance upon our inner nature. This becomes possible only when we employ our mind and intellect fully in our laborious deeds, when we abandon envy—the tendency to find fault in the qualities of others—and when we practice karma yoga with sincere faith. **On Shraddha (Faith)** The Sanskrit term shraddha carries profound meaning that cannot be expressed by any single word in English. Sri Shankaracharya defines shraddha as that faith in the words of scripture and the guru through which knowledge of truth is attained. Here, blind superstition is not called shraddha; rather, it is described as that capacity of the intellect through which knowledge of truth arises. Without faith, one cannot engage in any endeavor; and without the maturity of reflection, faith cannot become firm. **On Anavasyanti (Not Finding Fault in Virtues)** In the world, whatever knowledge we acquire is examined through criticism and countered with arguments. But here the Blessed Lord cautions Arjuna: this knowledge is not meant merely for heated debate or deep study alone. Its truth can be experienced only by bringing it into actual living. **On Liberation Through Action** Many students are bewildered upon reading such statements. Until now, the Lord has been teaching skillful action, and suddenly He says that such a person becomes free from action. Naturally, those unfamiliar with the precise meanings of scriptural terms perceive a contradiction in these words. When we clarified the meaning of naiskarma, we saw that ignorance of the Self expresses itself as desire, thought, and action. Therefore, upon recognizing the Self—which is bliss itself—the desires and actions born of ignorance cease to exist. Thus, the true meaning of liberation from action taught here is the attainment of the Self, which stands beyond ignorance. Perfection in the nature of the Supreme cannot be attained through actions alone. The parliamentary road is not itself parliament, but upon traveling it, the parliament building is no longer distant. Similarly here, karma yoga is praised as the path to the highest purpose because through its practice, the inner instrument becomes purified, and the seeker becomes fit to meditate upon the eternal, liberated nature of the Self.
