Bhagavad Gita Chapter 2, Verse 54 (BG 2.54) — Meaning, Translation & Commentary

In the two verses preceding this one, while reflecting upon karma yoga, the Lord has naturally pointed toward the ultimate goal of the karma yogi. This principle was both rational and comprehensible to the intellect. When heard from the lips of Sri Krishna himself, there remains no doubt whatsoever regarding its authenticity. Arjuna's very nature was such that karma yoga alone could be acceptable to him. The grief-stricken Arjuna of the first chapter, having forgotten his sorrow, now began to take interest in this dialogue. Due to his action-oriented nature, he harbored a doubt: whether, upon attaining life's goal through buddhi yoga, an active life in this world would still be possible. From the conventional meaning of terms like samadhi, one might understand that the yogi remains absorbed in self-realization, dwelling in solitude within himself. According to prevalent descriptions, a new seeker might imagine that the wise person becomes unfit for practical worldly life. Arjuna, raised in an age of hatred and cunning, harboring such misconceptions, wished to know the characteristics of the wise person before accepting this knowledge. His intense eagerness to fully understand the marks of one established in wisdom shines clearly when he asks what might seem unnecessary questions—how such a person speaks, how he sits, and so forth. Such questioning from Arjuna, having emerged from his state of delusion, is entirely appropriate. The first line of the verse inquires about the inner nature of one established in wisdom, while the second line expresses curiosity about his conduct in the external world. In this context, "established in wisdom" means that person who has gained direct, immediate experience of the atman. Now the Lord describes those characteristics of the wise person which are natural to him and serve as means of practice for the seeker.
