Bhagavad Gita Chapter 8, Verse 16 (BG 8.16) — Meaning, Translation & Commentary

The spiritual teacher Sri Krishna employs a distinctive method in the Bhagavad Gita to emphasize and clarify his principles: he presents each principle against the backdrop of its opposing truth. This method is used throughout the Gita, and in this verse too, two contrasting truths are expressed together, allowing any sincere student to understand them clearly through comparative reflection. The first line states that all worlds up to Brahmaloka are subject to return and rebirth. In contrast, those souls who directly experience the atman attain me and do not return to birth. In Vedanta, there is established the principle of gradual liberation. According to this, the person who simultaneously practices both Vedic action and worship attains Brahmaloka—the realm of the Creator—as the fruit of this combined practice. There, at the end of a cosmic cycle, through the teachings of Brahma, such a soul becomes one with the Supreme Brahman and thus attains liberation. Even in Brahmaloka, to become worthy of liberation, one must practice self-discipline, follow Brahma's teachings, and engage in self-inquiry. Only then can one achieve complete freedom from the bondage born of ignorance. Those souls who do not reach Brahmaloka cannot experience the bliss of liberation. At the end of a cosmic cycle, they must assume another body according to their remaining karma. Keeping this principle in mind, the Lord says that all souls who attain the worlds up to Brahmaloka must be reborn. However, those worthy of attaining Brahmaloka become liberated. But those who, in this very life, have directly realized their true eternal nature attain me—the all-pervading atman—and do not return to the world again. Just as one who awakens from a dream does not re-enter that dream, awakening means liberation forever from the pleasure and pain experienced in the dream. The seeker who attains the awakened state does not return to the dream of worldly existence.
