# BG 13.9 — The Qualities of Knowledge **Dispassion Toward the Objects of the Senses** Dispassion does not mean fleeing from the world. Rather, it means dwelling among the objects of sense while the mind remains unoccupied with them and the heart remains unattached. This is the true meaning of dispassion. The person who runs away from objects and sits in a forest, yet continues to contemplate them in the mind, is merely suppressing his desires. The Lord has called such a person a deceiver. **Freedom from Ego** The sense of individual selfhood arises only when we identify ourselves with the body and its experiences. To abide in our true nature as pure consciousness, we must first dissolve this false identification through discrimination. This process is like clearing weeds before tilling the soil. **Perception of the Defects in Existence** Dissatisfaction with our present condition alone can impel us toward a higher, more excellent, and blissful state. Until the people of a nation or society awaken to the fact that their present condition is utterly degraded and sorrowful, they adapt themselves to that very condition and forget their suffering. This is why every political leader or social reformer first awakens people to their fallen and impoverished state. Once this awareness dawns, they become eager to strive for a superior joy and a prosperous life. This principle applies equally to the cultural and spiritual domains. Until the seeker fully recognizes the bondage of his inner nature, he remains trapped in the pit of self-created suffering and makes no effort to escape. The human body and mind possess a remarkable capacity to adapt themselves to circumstances—so much so that they accept even the most degraded conditions and come to experience happiness within them. Therefore, the seeker is instructed here to examine thoughtfully the defects in his present condition. Once he fully understands his state of bondage, there will arise within him all the necessary qualities: spiritual yearning, intellectual capacity, mental enthusiasm, and physical courage—through which he shall easily attain spiritual perfection. **Perception of Defects in Birth, Death, Old Age, and Disease** Every body is subject to these afflictions. Each of these defects is a source of endless suffering. When awareness of the suffering arising from all these afflictions awakens, the person becomes eager for liberation from them. This rebellion against suffering is the very force that impels seekers swiftly toward the summit of perfection.
