3.40 इन्द्रियाणि the senses? मनः the mind? बुद्धिः the intellect? अस्य its? अधिष्ठानम् seat? उच्यते is called? एतैः by these? विमोहयति deludes? एषः this? ज्ञानम् wisdom? आवृत्य having enveloped? देहिनम् the embodied.Commentary If the abode of the enemy is known it is ite easy to kill him. So Lord Krishna like a wise army general points out to Arjuna the abode of desire so that he may be able to attack it and kill it ite readily.

Modern

Desire is the enemy that steals away the peace and contentment of the mind. Once Prince Arjun recognizes this adversary, like a warrior seeking intelligence about his foe's stronghold, he wishes to know where desire resides and operates. As the Teacher of spiritual wisdom, the Lord must reveal to him the dwelling places from which this desire schemes its most wicked designs. The seats of desire are the senses, the mind, and the intellect. Just as a bandit chief commanding a vast criminal network maintains multiple strongholds from which to direct his operations across wide territories, so too does the enemy of desire occupy several fortified positions. Here, the Lord clearly identifies the specific dwelling places of this adversarial force. When the senses, unrestrained and undisciplined, wander freely among objects of perception, they become the first and most suitable abode for desire to take root. When sensory impressions of objects reach the mind through these unguarded gateways, the mind too becomes fertile ground for the birth of desires and their consequent sufferings. Finally, the intellect—clouded by memories of past indulgences and bound by attachments born of those experiences—serves as desire's third and most secure fortress. The ignorant soul, deluded by lack of wisdom, identifies itself with the body and craves the enjoyment of objects. Without discernment, it identifies with the mind and intellect, seeking satisfaction through feelings and thoughts. To seek out desire in these places is to confront the enemy directly. The means by which this adversary is ultimately vanquished shall be revealed in the verses that follow.
