Bhagavad Gita Chapter 3, Verse 6 (BG 3.6) — Meaning, Translation & Commentary

# BG 3.6 One cannot achieve anything by merely restraining the body while remaining inactive. What then can be said of attaining perfection? The seeker who has not wisely withdrawn the mind and intellect from dwelling upon sense objects—even while controlling the organs of action—will surely find their spiritual progress insecure and devoid of lasting joy. Modern psychology confirms the truth of this teaching. Dwelling mentally upon unethical and sinful acts is far more harmful than merely refraining from committing them through the body. The nature of the mind is to repeatedly dwell upon a single thought. Through such continuous contemplation of one idea, deep impressions and latent tendencies form within the mind. Once these are established, every thought that arises flows in that predetermined direction. When the current of thought becomes fixed, it becomes the very nature of the person, expressing itself in all their actions. Thus, through constant dwelling upon sense objects, worldly impressions become deeply etched into the mind, and the person, driven by these impressions, is compelled to act accordingly in the world. One who outwardly displays moral and idealistic conduct while inwardly harboring base and degrading tendencies is not a true seeker of the spiritual path, but rather—as stated here—deluded and a practitioner of falsehood. We all know that even with physical restraint, it is difficult for an ordinary person to control the mind's tendency toward sense objects. Understanding that the common person cannot protect themselves from their natural inclinations, the Blessed Lord says:
