Bhagavad Gita Chapter 7, Verse 18 (BG 7.18) — Meaning, Translation & Commentary

The Lord Sri Krishna, whose heart overflows with compassion for His devotees, declares here with clarity that whosoever practices devotion to Me is indeed superior to all others—whether that devotee seeks My grace to alleviate their suffering, or whether they approach Me for material prosperity. In whatever manner they turn their hearts toward Me, the Infinite, they are moving in the right direction, and thus they are noble. Yet among these four types of devotees, the wise one—the person of knowledge—is truly My own Self. We all understand the vast difference between being the friend of a minister and becoming a minister oneself. There is no doubt that merely by gaining the friendship of a minister, one attains a place of considerable influence in society. Yet all the dignity, authority, and power of the ministerial office are fully realized only when one becomes the minister. Similarly, to worship the Divine for a particular blessing, to invoke the Lord for a specific fruit—this is indeed a divine quality. But the wise person, free from all desire, transcends the mind and intellect, recognizes their true nature as the Supreme Self, dissolves the limited ego, and attains unity with the Eternal. Such a wise one thereafter dwells eternally in the nature of the Self alone. Therefore, compared to other devotees, the wise person of knowledge is supreme—this is the view of Sri Krishna.
