Bhagavad Gita Chapter 1, Verse 32 (BG 1.32) — Meaning, Translation & Commentary

When the intellect is completely severed from its moorings, the bewildered mind wanders hither and thither like that of a madman, arriving at foolish conclusions. He declares: "I desire neither victory nor kingdom nor happiness." It is a well-established fact that when a person afflicted with hysteria is allowed to speak, they reveal the true cause of their affliction through negation. For instance, when a woman is seized by such a condition, in her delirium she may say that she still loves her husband, that she respects him, and that there exists no discord between them—yet through these very statements, she unwittingly reveals the actual root of her malady. Similarly, through Arjuna's present rejection of all things, we can discern the true state of his mind: he desired victory. He was eager to swiftly obtain kingdom and happiness for himself and his kinsmen. But upon witnessing the vast army of the Kauravas and the renowned valiant warriors arrayed within it, his hopes were shattered, his ambitions crumbled, and his self-confidence began to waver. Thus, he gradually descended into a state of despondency known as Arjuna's affliction—the very malady whose remedy is the subject matter of the Bhagavad Gita.
