Bhagavad Gita Chapter 5, Verse 18 (BG 5.18) — Meaning, Translation & Commentary

# BG 5.18 Our vision of the world is shaped by the knowledge we possess. The person established in Self-knowledge beholds the divine essence of the atman present uniformly everywhere. Just as the ocean cannot hold different feelings toward the countless waves that arise within it, so too, from the perspective of clay, all vessels fashioned from clay are fundamentally the same. Similarly, the person free from ego who has recognized their true nature as Brahman develops an equanimous vision toward the entire creation of names and forms. All apparent distinctions in the visible world exist only in the limiting conditions, not in the essential reality. Differences between human and human may appear in bodily form and complexion, or in the temperament of the mind and the acuteness of intellect. Yet the vital essence of life remains eternally one in all. Therefore, this verse declares that the brahmin endowed with learning and humility, the cow, the elephant, the dog, and the outcast—the wise person who has realized the atman perceives all of these with equanimous vision. In all limiting conditions, one supreme truth alone abides. The principal characteristic of Self-realization is equanimous perception. The wise person does not discriminate based on personal likes and dislikes. The supreme truth experienced as one's own atman, they perceive expressed through various names and forms. Regarding this verse, Sri Shankara raises a question by citing the Gautama Smriti, which is addressed in the following verse. According to that scripture, just as disrespecting a worthy person is a fault, so too honoring an unworthy person carries equal fault. From this perspective of the smriti, showing respect to a dog as one would to a brahmin, or showing disrespect to an excellent brahmin as one would to a dog—both would be sinful acts. Yet the equanimous seer is entirely free from such fault. The reason is this:
