When Lord Krishna offers this teaching, He proceeds with the understanding that Arjuna is entirely unfamiliar with this subject matter. Yet simultaneously, He does not wish merely to impose His own views upon him, which Arjuna might accept blindly and without discernment. To transform one's dharma is not the work of Vedanta. The Hindu people are unaware of this principle. Before offering any prescriptive teaching—any directive of what ought to be done—extensive reasoning and logical argument are first presented. Having fully explained the wheel of karma, He now arrives at His final conclusion in this verse, and encourages Arjuna to act. Therefore, as a worthy citizen of your society and nation, you must always perform your prescribed duties with proper understanding and care. Here once again, emphasis is placed upon remaining unattached in all actions. Attachment springs from ego—from egoic desire rooted in self-interest. Thus, non-attachment means the renunciation of ego and selfishness. Earlier, it was explained how attachment gives rise to desires and cravings. For this reason also, you must perform your duties.
