Bhagavad Gita Chapter 6, Verse 41 (BG 6.41) — Meaning, Translation & Commentary

The path to the next world depends upon the actions performed in this world and the intentions that inspire them. Actions are fundamentally of two kinds: those that bind us through sin, and those that elevate us through virtue. Those who engage in sinful action descend, while only those who take refuge in virtuous action advance spiritually. Our scriptures further divide these virtuous actions into two categories: (a) actions performed with desire—those motivated by personal longing—and (b) actions performed without desire—those undertaken as worship of the Divine, offered in the spirit of dedication and surrender. The fruit of action corresponds always to the intention of the doer; therefore, the fruits of desire-motivated and desire-free actions are necessarily different. It is natural, then, that the paths of these virtuous seekers toward the ultimate goal of perfection will also differ. This teaching reveals those very paths. Those who worship the Divine through sacrifice, ritual, and other virtuous deeds, desiring to attain the celestial worlds and realms of bliss, do indeed attain such worlds after casting off the body—worlds suited to fulfill their desires. Having dwelt in those realms, they are reborn into the homes of the righteous and wealthy, those of pure conduct in this world. In brief: if one harbors a firm resolve and makes sincere effort, any desire of a human being shall be fulfilled in its proper time. But what becomes of those who perform virtuous action in a spirit free from desire? The Blessed Lord now speaks.
