Bhagavad Gita Chapter 4, Verse 32 (BG 4.32) — Meaning, Translation & Commentary

In this world, we observe that different actions yield different fruits. Therefore, these twelve sacrificial acts should also produce varied results. To demonstrate that although these appear distinct, all share a single aim, it is said here that in this manner, many sacrifices are spread forth in the mouth of Brahman—meaning that the goal of all sacrifices is Brahman alone. Just as all royal roads lead to the capital, know all these to arise from action. From the Blessed Lord's teaching, two intentions emerge: First, one must earnestly practice these disciplines as taught in the Vedas. The Lord reminds Arjuna that if he desires self-development, action is indispensable. Second, all these sacrifices are merely means, not the ultimate end. Our true goal is the state of completeness, whereas actions arise only from desires born of ignorance regarding our true, perfect nature. Understanding in this way, you shall be liberated—and this understanding means not merely intellectual comprehension, but direct realization of the Self. True knowledge was called the sacrifice of wisdom. Thereafter, many forms of sacrifice were described. Now, in praise of the sacrifice of wisdom above all other sacrifices, its excellence is revealed.
