Bhagavad Gita Chapter 5, Verse 26 (BG 5.26) — Meaning, Translation & Commentary

In this age of asura, the wise person who inspires people to live a divine life—purifying the fallen through compassion, healing the diseased through love that wells up in the heart for all beings, illuminating darkness and guiding the ignorant—performs the work of service to society while remaining untouched by the impurities of the world, established in their own divine nature. Just as a physician, dwelling among the sick and treating their ailments, remains unaffected by their diseases and does not become emotionally overwhelmed by their suffering, so too the wise person, living among those afflicted by sorrow, desire, and base material tendencies, remains untouched even by their faults. How does the perfected soul maintain equanimity amid the world's temptations? The Blessed Lord says: The person who, through the strength of their own effort, conquers the mind's tendencies toward desire and anger, and follows the path of divine life as taught in the scriptures, attains Self-knowledge and thereby achieves this equanimity—that which nothing can shake or disturb. Such a one remains established in Brahmananda, both in this life and even after the body is laid aside. Now the Blessed Lord describes the direct inner practice of right understanding—the yoga of meditation—in the two aphoristic verses that follow.
