# BG 10.35 Among the sacred chants, I am the Brihat-sama. Among the Vedas, I am the Sama Veda. Among the metres, I am the Gayatri. Among the months, I am Margashirsha. Among the seasons, I am spring. Among all chants sung from the Rigveda, I am the Brihat-sama—that most exalted hymn through which the Supreme Lord is glorified. The singing of these sacred chants requires a most refined and disciplined method, demanding years of devoted practice under the guidance of a teacher. Among all the metres in which the Vedic mantras are composed, I am the Gayatri. All human beings are born without refinement and culture. In the Hindu tradition, the sacred initiation of a child is performed through the Gayatri mantra, which is composed in the Gayatri metre. Thus this metre holds supreme significance. The Gayatri contains twenty-four syllables, and through this mantra the deity Savitri is worshipped. Brahmins offer water to the sun at dawn and dusk during their twilight prayers, chanting this sacred mantra. No other mantra in any religion of the world has been continuously chanted by so many devoted seekers for such an extended period as the Gayatri mantra. This mantra is considered supremely powerful and efficacious. Among the months, I am Margashirsha—the period spanning parts of December and January. This month is held sacred in India. From the perspective of climate, it is most pleasant, for it is neither marked by the dampness of the rainy season nor the heat of summer. Among the seasons, I am spring—that season which brings joy to all creation. The king of seasons adorns the mountains with flowers, clothes the earth in verdant garments, and fills the lakes and ponds with the laughter of blooming lotuses. The meadows are carpeted with green, and all hearts overflow with the joy of celebration. The moonlight itself adorns itself with greater care to crown creation's exultation. Yet know this: you must not see Me only in the magnificent and divine, nor only in the beautiful and attractive. Rather, recognize Me even in the humblest and most lowly—for I am, and I am all that is.
