Bhagavad Gita Chapter 2, Verse 5 (BG 2.5) — Meaning, Translation & Commentary

Arjuna presents once again arguments that appear highly sophisticated on the surface, yet are fundamentally devoid of true meaning—for he has failed to understand even his own predicament, having not understood himself. Here he refers to his teachers, Bhishma and Drona, as noble souls, meaning the exemplary figures of their age. They stand as living symbols of all that is elevated and supreme in their culture, having made countless sacrifices for eternal dharma with hearts vast and magnanimous. To destroy such venerable ideals and great souls of the age merely for personal power and dominion seems utterly unjustifiable. Not only would that particular era be diminished, but the loss of these great beings would impoverish generations yet unborn, deprived of their invaluable legacy. Arjuna declares that it would be far more fitting to abandon the thought of destroying the fairest flowers of the garden of culture and instead sustain the Pandavas through alms and humble living. He cannot even enjoy the kingdom won by slaying these teachers, for it would be stained with their bitter memories and precious blood—recollections so painful that they could never be forgotten. Once we make a flawed assessment of our circumstances, emotion clouds our intellect, and we too begin to conduct ourselves in life as Arjuna does.
